The purple/black 2007 Quinta do Roriz Vintage Port displays a pleasing
perfume of violets, incense, spice box, and assorted black fruits. On
the palate it has excellent volume with plenty of round, layered, succulent
fruit and an overall friendly personality. Impeccably balanced, this mid-weight
Port will evolve for 6-8 years and drink well through 2027. It offers
solid value. – Jay Miller

Cask sample. Now back in the hands of the Symington’s in what may be the
final volley between them and the Van Zeller family regarding this property.
The 2007 leads off with compelling aromas of earthy black raspberry, anise,
smoky prune, tar and tapenade. Quite an exotic elixir and I could have
kept my nose buried in the glass and probably would have come up with
another half dozen descriptors. I love when that happens. The Roriz is
dangerously delicious and a Port of finesse, with distinctive depth in
the mid-palate and great promise for developing complexity. The components
seem to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, with flavors of red raspberry
and ripe, spicy pomegranate and a massive infusion of chocolate covered
raisins on the lingering and voluptuous finish. I must add that the aftertaste
is excellent but slightly marred by youthful heat and hopefully it will
integrate down the road which would allow the score to migrate towards
the higher end of the range. Best consumed circa 2032.

Opaque purple with a garnet edge. The Roriz offers a compelling mix of
dark raspberry, minerals and a touch of spirit. Although I found this
to be surprisingly approachable with lush, syrupy-sweet red berry fruit,
it also provided powerful tannins on the finish and showed potential for
long term cellaring.
The Roriz VPs continue to improve and impress, even in vintages that possess
less panache. 750 cases were produced. 93-95+ points (6-28-06)

Aromas of licorice, blackberries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied
palate, with light sweetness and an incredible core of gorgeous raspberry
fruit. Long finish. Another 1865 Roriz in the making? Best after 2014.

Roriz and Croft were the two big surprises for me. The former is now managed
by the Symington family, which owns such great names as Graham, Dow and
Warre. Roriz is an historic Port property, and the 2003 could one day
be as legendary as the great 1865 Roriz. According to Rupert Symington,
one of the directors of the family-owned house, Roriz was one of the earliest
ripening vineyards in the Douro Valley and produced extraordinary grapes
in 2003. "The 2003 was all made in traditional lagares, out of mainly
old vines," he said. Lagares are traditional open-trough fermenting
containers made of stone.

Big and concentrated, with a massive tannin structure and loads of very
sweet fruit. It goes on and on on the palate. Very impressive and muscular.
This single quinta really excelled in 2003. Great pedigree, too. I once
had the 1865 Roriz and it was fantastic. 1,500 cases made. James Suckling.

Purplish crimson, with blue highlights. Unusually floral nose. Big broad
sweet hit and then a massive charge of fine, inky tannins. Slightly spindly
but elegant. Refresing level of acidity. A certain graininess of texture.

Quinta do Roriz Vintage Port 2003: A single quinta, the most recent addition
to the Symington portfolio. Mineral character on the nose. Great depth
of fruit. Very pure, elegant, expressive. A wealth of fruit on the palate,
too, with very ripe tannins. This has quite some finesse. Pure, seamless,
high quality. Very good potential.

2003 Quinta de Roriz - opaque ruby purple color, nose shows tightly and
in time offers some violet floral notes. The Roriz leaves an impression
of ultra sweet juice, a medium body that is generous and elegant, with
red raspberry and prominent cranberry flavors. The tannins arrive late
on the simple aftertaste, which is medium in length and highlights a touch
of alcohol. Mid-term aging potential 10-20 years. 1,650 cases produced.

Richly textured, verging on opulent, this should be a relatively early
maturing Port. Complex and intriging on the nose, where smoky, mineraly
aromas evoke memories of sun-baked Douro schist, backed-up by plush blackberry
fruit and a dash of maple syrup.

Roriz is upstream from Pinhao along the south bank of the river; its owned
by Johnny van Zeller and produced by the Symingtons. This 01 is a savory
vintage style, emphasizing the resinous green scent of esteva while its
fruit remains black and closed. The wine is reduced at the moment to its
structure, to the heat of the Douro and the terse acidity out of schist.
Time should bring the fruit out of hiding, though its likely to remain
tight and elegant. Open it again in 12 to 15 years.- Joshua Greene

Quinta de Roriz 2000 Vintage Port ;
Wine Spectator.com, Tuesday, March 11, 2003
The 2000 vintage for Port hasn't gotten the hype that 2000 Bordeaux has,
but some excellent wines are available. The Ports of 2000 seem to be a
compromise between the classic vintages of 1997 and 1994 -- with the fabulous
aromas of the 1997s and the glorious richness and ripeness of the 1994s.
The best of the 2000s will need at least 10 to 15 years of bottle age,
although some people may wish to enjoy them, with their baby fat, at an
earlier stage. Prices are comparable to what they were for the 1997s --
about $60 to $80 per bottle for the top wines.
The best Vintage Ports of 2000 include Graham (98), Quinta do Noval Nacional
(97), Quinta do Noval (96), Taylor Fladgate (95), Quinta de Roriz (95),
Smith Woodhouse (95) and Churchill (95).

A sizeable 150 ha property that has been owned by the Van Zeller family
since 1815. This is an opaque colour, and is bold, rich and spicy, with
lovely vivid fruit. Theres quite a bit of tannic structure and a fair
bit of sweetness. A really lovely, well balanced wine. - Jamie Goodle,

João van Zeller (Cristiano's father's first cousin) has given me
a historic view of this property that maintains the original architecture
from 1767. There are about 105 acres planted to grape at this Quinta located
on the bank of the Rio Douro, and this property used to sell grapes to
Gonzalez and also Kopke years ago. Quinta de Roriz gave its name to "Tinta
Roriz", a grape variety brought originally from Spain to Portugal
by a van Zeller ancestor, under the name of "Tempranillo." The
wine from this property is now marketed by the Symington group. There
are six lagares in use at the Quinta. The 2000 Roriz is a dark, opaque
purple with intense sweet aromas of freshly picked flowers. Dense, chewy
blackberry preserves and jammy blueberry pie. Medium to full-bodied with
refined tannins for such a youngster. There is a bit of alcohol showing
on the medium length finish. The aromatics here are dramatic and overall
the wine is pleasant but somewhat simple. The Roriz should cellar well
for the mid-term. Approximately 2,000 cases were produced. Roy Hersh

Excellent deep healthy purple. Big, round and toasty - rather attractive
on the nose. Good sweet mid-palate with topnotes that make it a really
well balanced, lively proposition even if it fails to be one of the biggest
wines in the line-up. Quite chewy and respectable. Attractive for the
medium-term. Drink 2010-2020

2000 Port is a vintage to be seized with both hands, according to RICHARD
EHRLICH. Id nab a couple of bottles from any of the major houses. Taylors,
the least opulently luscious of the major houses, is a particular favourite.
Dows is another star. I would hunt down Quinta do Roriz and Churchills
as well. I would be on the look out for wines from Niepoort, Quinta do
Crasto and Ferreira. And I would keep them until (a) they are ready or
(b) I decide to give them to my grandchildren.

C hunky, vanilla spice, floral, round and weighty. There is the tightness

A very tight aroma but its finesse shows promise, already revealing a
silky, soft style in the aroma. Very good on the palate, delicate, full

Vinhos de Portugal 2003 Best of the Year
To soon obtain a place in the list of the best ones for a first vintage
could be an objective of many but is not easy, for the competition is
fierce. We think, however, that this wine deserves this privilege, they
prove that more time will give more pleasure. It surely proves now that
they are able to dig more in time but for now let's choose to consume
this new one. It is a full wine but with immense harmony, a fruit of great
quality and a silky texture. Pure pleasure, candy. - Joao Paulo Martins
Quinta de Roriz 1999 Vintage Port
Wine & Spirits, April 2002
88/100
This '99 comes primarily from old vines, before João van Zeller
and the Symington family began replanting this Quinta in 2000. Delicious
and young, this hits right off with a floral, strawberry scent and a lovely
texture. It's more vinous than most Porto, built more like a Banyuls.
Tart and grapy, high in tone, this doesn't seem destined for long aging,
but at eight to ten years, it should be a star with Roquefort, gorgonzola
dolce or a block of Stilton.
Portuguese Wines, February 2002
17/20 Behoord tot de drie beste Vintage Ports van 1999!
Like the Infantioo, vegetal notes dominate here and it is also neither
dense nor full-bodied. Fruit is more evident, dense and ripe, and the
flavour on the palate is good. A lovely vintage
